Community Program - Hunter Medicare Local Challenge

Posted on August 6, 2012 at 10:05 AM Comments comments (0)

This article was published in the Newcastle Herald on July 23, 2012. We supplied the boats and the sweeps for the challenge on Newcastle Harbour  between Hunter Medicare Local and Hunter Integrated Pain Services, who were promoting the commencement of National Pain Awareness Week. We paddled from the Carrington Boat Ramp down the harbour to The Brewery, turned around and did some races on the way back. These medicos recognise the importance of exercise in the management of pain, and chose to do dragonboat racing as an example of the wide variety of physical activities available. We also held our training session on Throsby Creek that morning and enjoyed an impromptu race with Newcastle Dragons Abreast team, which they won by about half a boat length, which we were were quite happy with since they had four more paddlers than we did. Thank you ladies. It was fun.

The Arrival of the Spirit

Our second boat, the beautiful Spirit on the left, was delivered and launched yesterday with the help of 19 club members and some visitors from Toronto. After our on water warm up, our 2 trainee sweeps took control of the boats for the remainder of the session, which was followed by a well-earned breakfast at Savannah's in Morpeth. Check out the album on the Photos page.

Open Day Review

Posted on November 21, 2011 at 3:35 AM Comments comments (0)

Thank you to all who attended our Open Day yesterday, and especially those who contributed to the organisation and management of the event. Petra has put some great photos on Photos page. 33 adults and 9 juniors paddled yesterday, with 11 of the adults being new contacts. We now have 68 people on our contacts list. If you weren't able to make it yesterday, please feel free to come along to any training session to have a go - you will need to book in though - see the Training page for details. For new paddlers, the first two sessions are free. After that, you can either join the club for unlimited training sessions at no extra cost, or you can pay a casual paddler rate of $10 per session. We are currently asking members to pay a deposit of $50 on their club fees. The annual fee for the first year will be decided in the new year when we have a better idea of income and expenses.

Our bank details for direct deposits are:
