The Four Elements of the Stroke

I particularly like this document because not only does it clearly explain the four stroke phases, but the photographs help to clarify what is meant by the text. Look at the body setup, hands in (1), arms in (2), the torso rotating down to the water, straight arms pulling back, always long and tight. 

Almost anyone can learn it, but it does take focus and practice.

 1) THE REACH - sometimes called THE SET-UP


2) THE CATCH - the front of the stroke, and

3) THE PULL - also called the POWER PHASE
